Manufacturing Collaboration by leveraging MIP and PLM Capabilities

The European Commision is collaborating with several industry partners to realize their vision for the ‘Factories of the Future’. Research in context of that vision is focusing on maintaining manufacturing information and providing technology to realize better cooperation of participators within the manufacturing process. Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) is typically an information strategy, providing a platform to repeatable manage all processes concerning product and manufacturing process data enabling enterprises to transform their business strategy. This enterprise wide access to product information and processes is covering subject matter areas starting from Ideation and continues over Design and Research down to Manufacturing and finally Service. A combination of the ‘Factories of the Future’ vision and the PLM strategy will greatly extend anticipated benefits.

Intermediate Review meeting demonstrating Use-Case 1

The FoFdation project partners gathered on the 13th of February at Ecolé Centrale (ECN) in Nantes, France for an intermediate review meeting. Project partners along with the Project Officer Mr. Rolf Riemenschneider and four external reviewers Thomas Baer (Daimler), Christoph Hanisch (Festo), Christos Emmanouilidis (CETI/R.C.) and Dominique Laffret (Missler) attended. The review meeting focused on two main topics: first of all the overall project status and the project progress and secondly focused on demonstrating some of the project results being applied in a use-case demonstration scenario. This first Airbus Use-Case scenario revolved around of two project results: the Smart Machine Controller (SMC) and Smart Manufacturing Optimiser (SMO).

Demonstrating the next generation of Smart Machine Controllers

During the last three and half years, the FoFdation project consortium has investigated on how the next generation machine tool controller will “close the gap” between the designer, the manufacturing engineer and the shop floor. The consortium agreed on the opinion that STEP-NC would also have had an important role in that.

Manufacturing Collaboration with Suppliers throughout the extended Enterprise

On the way to the factory of the future (FoFdation) one of the first and obvious tasks is to integrate the shopfloor with the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) backbone, which in the end should aim to unify the physical and the virtual worlds in manufacturing. Furthermore another level of diversity needs to be overcome along the value chain. For many years manufacturing companies have been adopting various strategies to optimize their value chain and specific lean production methodologies were introduced to reduce internal complexity and to help outsourcing specific manufacturing tasks to selected suppliers and their factories. These are specialized on certain areas and can fulfill the requirements on quality, speed, price and flexibility.

Smart Enterprise Content Management through a Dashboard information system for Performance prediction & indicators: A First Prototype

Smart Enterprise Content Management (SECM) is a new concept based on prototype software proposed in the FoFdation project which addresses sustainability issues through the visualization and processing of production data. A sustainability Dashboard along with various adapters is proposed to this end. The Dashboard allows the visualization of sustainability indicators thus supporting decision making at the management level, while the adapters are used to integrate other project’s development outcomes such as Smart Manufacturing Execution System or to interconnect seamlessly with external systems, such as ERP and PLM.

The Smart Machine Controller: is it the next generation controller?

In today’s industry we do not have a unique and clear definition of what a Smart Machine Controller (SMC) is or should be. In other industrial fields, the consumer market mainly, a smart “device” is a component that generally presents more advanced computing capability and connectivity than a contemporary basic device. A recent survey confirms for instance that the trend for machine tool industry instead is unifying different machine functions on a single controller and lowering overall total installed costs.

The Smart Enterprise Content Management: Progress on research, implementations and demonstration

9 people representing 6 beneficiaries of the collaborative FoFdation project met in January 2013 to present and discuss the status of the research and implementations to date on the Smart Enterprise Content Management (SECM). The SECM is a new generation of Content Management Systems which aims to meet sustainability goals through visualization with the help of a dashboard and adapters linking this platform to various entities, such as ERP and PLM.

ARTIS and CRF demonstrate FIAT Use Case in FoFdation project with CTM process monitoring solution

Demonstration of the first FoFdation results was planned for March 2013 at CRF, Centro Ricerche FIAT, in Orbassano, Italy. ARTIS’ role was to set up and use the SMO, Smart Manufacturing Optimiser, which is to be used to meet FIAT sustainability goals.

The SMES is a new generation of Manufacturing Execution Systems which leads to meet sustainability goals through awareness, evaluation and optimization in the manufacturing sector.

A New Manufacturing Information Framework

In the FoFdation project an automotive test case has been developed with the objectives of optimizing the manufacturing planning process and the energy consumption of the machines tool. Regarding the production planning process optimization, the manufacturing information framework that has been developed should manage different manufacturing steps such as production scheduling, production sequencing and production execution.

The Next Step in FoFdation: Setting-up Demonstrators Results of Research and Experiments will be Integrated

18 people representing 11 beneficiaries of the collaborative FoFdation project (The Foundation for the Smart Factory of the Future) met on 17th and 18th January 2013 in Geneva at GF Agie-Charmilles to present and discuss the status of the research and experiments done up until the end of 2012. Within the consortium mutual understanding and approval are needed to define the approach and set-up of the demonstrators in line with the use cases of Airbus, Centro Ricerche Fiat and GF Agie-Charmilles.

Realizing the Next-Generation CNC machine-tool

What should the Next-Generation CNC machine-tool look like? This is one of the subjects that FoFdation is trying to investigate and consortium partner EC-Nantes has been busy trying to give a glimpse into the future by creating a prototype platform. This particular prototype uses currently available tools and new developments to build an Open-NC platform for showcasing CNC functionalities that are expected, even demanded, in the future CNC machine-tool.

FoFdation project partners Artis and Delcam just finished a three day workshop in Birmingham to run the first set of machining experiments to validate the initial research outcomes of the 4th Work Package

Partner Artis (Germany) visited Delcam (United Kingdom) for three days at the end of November 2012 with the objective to install and train staff on using process monitoring equipment on one of the CNC machines inside Delcam’s toolroom. The second objective was to perform the first set of machining experiments to use the process monitoring equipment and to log process conditions to validate the R&D developments carried out by Delcam in order to improve the lead time and surface quality in milling processes.

Consortium partners of the FoFdation project gathered at ECN in Nantes, France, from 16th-19th October 2012 to share results and update everyone on the progress made so far towards achieving the project objectives. There were some excellent discussions and very informative presentations, and also individual work package meetings.

CIRP Conference on Intelligent Computation in Manufacturing Engineering,
Isle of Ischia, Italy

18 members of the European Commission FP7 funded FoFdation project attended the 8th CIRP Conference on Intelligent Computation in Manufacturing Engineering held in Ischia, Gulf of Naples, Italy.  The Conference attracted over 150 delegates and guests from 26 countries and 5 continents.  The main aim of the Conference was to provide an international forum for the exchange of knowledge, information, experience and results as well as reviewing the progress made.

CIRP Conference on Intelligent Computation in Manufacturing Engineering, Isle of Ischia, Italy

WP 3, 4, 5, 6 & 7 Meetings, Isle of Ischia, Italy

18 members of the FoFdation project travelled to the Isle of Ischia in Naples, Italy to discuss the progress of the FoFdation project itself, exchange thoughts with the IFaCOM project members, and to attend the 8th annual CIRP-ICME 2012 Conference.  Meetings were held for work packages 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 with representatives from 15 out of the 16 consortium partners from 8 different countries being present in their respective work package gatherings.

4th Work Package of the European “FoFdation” Project aims at developing innovative technologies to predict and control lead times and surface quality in milling processes

Delcam hosted the inaugural meeting of the 4th work package of the 10 M€ FoFdation project funded by the European Commission in Alicante, Spain. As the coordinating partner of this work package Delcam is combining its experience and expertise in manufacturing with eight other technical partners from six countries across Europe to capture and monitor the dynamic behaviour of milling machines to increase predictability in terms of surface quality and lead times.

Designing a “factory of the future” with a universal character based on the most modern systems of information and manufacture, creating a model for launching any production system anywhere in the world. This is the ambitious goal of the FoFdation (“Foundation for the Factory of the Future”) project, in which experts are participating from a consortium of companies, research centres and universities in Korea, Switzerland and the European Union, and amongst which is the Tekniker-IK4 Technological Centre.

Working group of the European “FoFdation” Project meet again to discuss machine tool and process parameters which affect lead times and surface quality in milling processes

Only one month after the successful Kick Off Meeting held in June, the 4th work package of the 10 M€ FoFdation project assembled again. This time to discuss which machine tool and process parameters affect lead times and surface quality in milling processes. It is the aim of the 4th working group to develop innovative technologies that will increase predictability in terms of surface quality and lead times.

European “FoFdation” Project aims at the universal information system foundation for sustainable manufacturing in the ‘Factory of the Future’

Leading experts from the EU, Switzerland and Korea joined in a cooperative R&D project to achieve a foundation for the information system for manufacturing systems. A universal information system will be based on data exchange standards using an information pipeline to distribute and share necessary information within a manufacturing system, locally or globally, seamlessly by a commonly accepted model and format.
